9 Reasons Doctor Strange Is The Least Anticipated MCU Movie
1. Marvel Fatigue
Despite multiple duds, we've heard very little this year about superhero fatigue. That may be because Deadpool offered a fresh new direction or that even the stinkers clog up the box office totals ranking, but it's a rather gratifying result all the same; there's only so much doomsday predicting we can all take.
However, what people maybe should be talking about is Marvel fatigue. It's not obvious given that Civil War is and likely will remain the year's highest grossing film, but over the past few months an increased lack of excitement for the studio's releases, which just a year or two ago simply didn't exist, has emerged.
Part of it will be the tepid 2015 offerings, although I'd wager a bigger problem is the backlash against the backlash against DC movies. Yes, we're through the looking glass people. A key defence of Batman V Superman and (to a lesser extent) Suicide Squad has been that it's different from the Marvel mould. While I don't agree - neither in that those films are fresh or smart, nor that Marvel films can't secure their own identity - there is an increasing complaint about Marvel formula, as well as a fear amongst those who have really hit out at the DCEU movies (for totally fair reasons) to flip and suddenly praise Marvel lest the fanboy slander be rendered true.
This may all seem a bit tin-hat, but it'd be naive to think the DC complaints haven't had some perverse effect.
