9 Reasons Why Big Trouble In Little China Is Still Awesome
7. It Is A Multi-Genre Film
It’s a mystical, action, adventure, comedy, Kung Fu, monster, ghost story! How many other films can claim to touch on that many genres? Not many. Logic then suggests that this film will appeal to a broad audience. You only have to have a vague interest in one of the many genres to find your ‘in’ for BTiLC.
The tone and pace of the film is perfect, moving from set piece to set piece, barely even pausing for breath – something which can often be to the detriment of character, but not here. It never takes itself too seriously either, and yet the peril and threat that the protagonists face always feels real.
As the film progresses you feel like you are merely skimming the surface of the greater Chinese mythology that the film is centred around, but that works perfectly as it is exactly the perspective from which Jack sees things. “You know something you’re not telling me, Wang.”
“Myths and legends. I don’t want to insult you.”
“No, go ahead, insult me.”
