These days, studios typically make a decent amount of money when they release an action thriller. They don't cost an exorbitant amount of money to make, and if they have a good start, the studio can expect a pretty good return on its investment.

Ava didn't exactly fit that description, and it's a movie that had several problems from the beginning. It began production in 2018, with Matthew Newton set to direct. However he had previously been accused of numerous assault and domestic violence charges, which brought a lot of controversy and criticism toward the project.

Newton stepped down, and the movie ended up being made by another director (and under a new name, as it was originally titled "Eve"). Once the movie was finished with post-production, it received only a limited marketing campaign, which suggested the studio knew it wasn't dealing with a blockbuster.

Ava was theatrically released first in Hungary, where it made only $31,820 from 59 theaters. When its box office run concluded, it made just shy of $2 million in Hungary, the Netherlands, Russia, and Slovakia. Ava should never have released in July 2020 — doing so guaranteed its failure.
