4. Shutter Island
Pulling the old switcheroo in the closing moments, Shutter Island manages to shoehorn in more than one plot twist in the best of ways, laying down the groundwork for one expectation then pulling the rug from under everything with one swift yank.
Teddy Daniels is a U. S. Marshall sent to the titular Shutter Island to investigate the disappearance of a woman, coupled up with a new partner as they together face up to the atrocities of a mental asylum in the midst of a storm that traps them there.
Teddy's search is one that branches between that of the island and his own darkest fears, exploring more than just one disastrous past that has taken place within Ashecliffe's walls as he desperately searches for the truth. When we finally get to it after a tight two hours of wringing our hands, it's a world away from what anyone would expect - since Teddy is far more closely involved than he would let himself believe.
The final moments then twist us all around again with the question of "which would be worse - to live as a monster? Or to die as a good man?" Did he know the truth all along!?
