Now for something a little more light-hearted! A Pixar film! Or at least something we thought was going to be a little more light-hearted, until the opening montage had us reaching for the tissues long before we had expected. This time it isn't the ending of a Pixar film, but the beginning of one, and that is exactly why it makes this so special.
A classic example of the old rule one of movie school 'show don't tell', this story of a couple's life together is sweet, harrowing and heartbreaking. A meditative and painfully honest portrayal of the beauty and pitfalls we may experience in life. As we watch Carl and Ellie meet, fall in love and grow up together, it's an unfamiliar story driven by familiar ideas.
It's a devastating reflection on life's aversions, and watching Carl and Ellie fight and battle through them is difficult, but it's this difficulty that sets up the character of Carl to become such an empathetic character. A beautiful score by Michael Giacchino illuminates the sadness on screen, and we already anticipate the redemptive journey Carl is about to experience. Told completely visually with no dialogue, it's Pixar at their heart wrenching best, and we all know how good that can be.
