2. Drive
'You give me a time and a place and I give you a five-minute window'. As the rhythmic bass pulsates our subwoofers, Gosling's 'Driver' warns his associates of his rigorous rules. 'Anything happens one minute either side of that, then you're on your own'.
In unforgettable style, Drive welcomed us to a neo-noir world of getaway driving. Featuring a typically strong performance from Gosling, an excellent soundtrack and direction that felt unique, it propelled forward the noir crime thrillers that characterised a large part of American cinema in the 80s and hammered it home to new audiences.
One of the longer openings on the list, Nicolas Winding Refn cut no corners in delivering an introduction that delves us straight into the heart of the story and the action that would underlie it. Set during the pre, present and post stages of a robbery, it's an atmospheric, tense and ultimately entertaining 11 minutes that has us on the edge of our seats from the beginning.
Those with a film inclination for catchy soundtracks and awesome chase scenes, you will find no better example of the two combined than in Drive, and the opening scene soon enough proves it.
