9 Teen Horror Movies That Are Actually Quite Scary

Worth the watch, or just too cringe?

In the 70's and 80's, teen horrors dominated the genre as a new wave, to entice another age of viewers to the cinema, and to enhance the scares themselves. These films often have the same conventions - the story is set in a high school, there is a murdered ghost or mass murderer looking for revenge on a group of kids.

It is most common for these types of films to include questionable acting and the most clumsy lines as the teenage group of friends, all of different stereotypes, begin to solve the urban legends and myths hidden behind the latest death.

In the 21st century, the horror genre has become ever more popular, and teen horrors are much less of a focal point than they once were. As such, it's easy to find yourself asking: are there any modern teen horrors that are still scary? What makes a good teen horror today?

Here is a list of just a few teen horrors that, at times, may make you question whether you are watching the film for a laugh or because you are frightened to find out more...

8. Unfriended

Unfriended is a horror released in 2014, with the whole plot taking place within a laptop screen. The basic premise of the film follows a group of teenage school friends as they begin a Skype session together, only for it to be interrupted by a spirit who is looking for revenge after their death.

At first, the kids assume that the account is someone playing a prank, named after a girl they remember bullying, but the result is far worse when they all begin to be killed off one by one.

The scare factor of Unfriended is pretty high, using the technology to their advantage as the glitching cameras cause the characters' demise - freezing for an uncomfortable amount of time before showing the victim screaming and dying. It's an important concept, warning teens of stranger danger on the internet, with the rise of social media presence becoming ever more important.

Without the computerised style, it's just another film about a vengeful evil ghost serial killer going after vulnerable kids, which is a concept recycled again and again.

This is one of those horrors where the sequel is just as good, with Unfriended: Dark Web released in 2018.
