5. R2-D2 Used To Be George Lucas' Favourite Character, Until...
On the Revenge Of The Sith audio commentary George Lucas revealed that R2-D2 was his all-time favourite Star Wars character, owing to his tendency to save the day at the last moment. In fact, after selling Lucasfilm to Disney and walking away from his creation he said that he would miss R2 the most and that he had always wanted a friend that was just like him. Lucas was asked the same question in the run-up to The Force Awakens release, but this time he gave a completely different, far more controversial answer. The 71-year-old revealed that the widely despised Jar Jar Binks was actually his favourite character from the franchise, and went on to explain that the overwhelmingly negative reaction to the goofy Gungan began to put him off filmmaking altogether:
You go to make a movie and all you do is get criticized and people try to make decisions about what youre going to do before you do it. Its not much fun and you cant experiment. You cant do anything. You have to do it a certain way. I dont like that.
