9 Well Deserved Movie Villain Deaths
4. John Fitzgerald - The Revenant
In order for us to believe Leonardo DiCaprio as a vengeful, bear-riddled frontiersman, we needed to believe Tom Hardy as a despicable and hateful pelt trapper. Thankfully Tom Hardy is just as much on form as Leo, and plays the role of murdering thief perfectly.
John Fitzgerald is placated as the opposite of Leo’s Hugh Glass. While Glass is quiet, methodical and respectful of the frontier, Fitzgerald is loud and abrasive. His antagonistic nature towards the rest of the trappers both irritates his companions and leaves the audience in unease. Tom Hardy plays the part of an unpredictable and psychotic man in the frontier brilliantly. And the inevitable conclusion to Glass and Fitzgerald’s story is earned.
The visceral and bloody fight in the climax, ends when a wounded Fitzgerald washes onto the other side of a river, where a Pawnee tribe finish the job- and out of gratitude for rescuing the tribe leader’s daughter, Glass is spared a similar wrath. As much as we love Tom Hardy’s performance in this film, there’s a cathartic weight lifted off us when he is killed by the Pawnee.
His deserved death signifies the end of the film, and Glass’ journey specifically.
