1. The Greatest Story Ever Told
Ultimately, no matter how you look at it, A Christmas Story is the definitive adaptation of Jean Shepherd's slice of life portrait of Christmas. Through perseverance, two burgeoning media markets, and almost three decades of existence, Ralphie Parker still speaks to all of our childhoods. Seeing him get that toy at the end of the film reminds us of many years where we were grateful to see that one special gift we thought Santa would never bring us. (Mine one year was a copy of GTA: Vice City.) A Christmas Story is a classic because it identifies with its audience, and at the same time holds a mirror to their behavior to show them just how foolish they were. In the end, as Ralphie reflects on the spirit of the season and the Mother who knew to grab a washcloth instead of say 'I told you so', we too are reminded that family is just as precious as any toy underneath the tree.
