A History of Horribly Haunted Objects in Horror Films

The EVIL Laundry Machine

Okay, so this one is actually a killer laundry folding machine, which doesn€™t make it any less outrageous, but for those of you who want to split hairs, consider them split. You may ask yourself, what minds could have produced such a profoundly unfrightening idea? Look no further than horror masters Stephen King and Tobe Hooper who collaborated on the wildly uneven filmic experiment known as The Mangler. Similar to the lamp in Amityville 4, the machine is designed like a giant torture device from the dark ages, which seems a fairly inappropriate aesthetic choice for a contraption meant to help fold laundry. After all is said and done however, there are scenes of extreme gore as human bodies are mashed, munched and folded into neat little piles of bone and flesh. The brutal violence stands in stark contrast to the otherwise completely nonsensical plot, giving the film a fascinating tonal quality. Unfortunately, in terms of haunted objects, it doesn€™t make me afraid to use the dryer. The film also contains a scene where a demon is being exorcised from a refrigerator. Maybe it€™s supposed to be funny.

I have a keen, almost obsessive fascination with the macabre. It has lead me from a quiet life growing up in a small town to where I am now; creating horrific works about horrific things in many different mediums including films, short stories and essays. I live life by a simple motto: learn to like the dark, cause eventually, it'll come for all of us (lightening flashes and thunder claps)... but it ain't so bad.
