A Wrinkle In Time Review: 3 Ups & 6 Downs
3. One Of The Child Performances Is...Not Good
It never feels good to criticise the performance of a young child actor trying to make their break in the business, but Deric McCabe's work here as Meg's adopted younger brother Charles Wallace is...really not good. Like, at all.
McCabe makes Meg's brother into a squeaky, loud-mouth irritation as he screeches his way through the movie's first act, and practically every second he's on screen, he's both distracting and annoying.
Thankfully his presence is dialled back for act two, but things get worse once again in the film's finale, when Charles Wallace becomes a significant fixture in the final showdown, and McCabe is asked to do some very...eccentric, over-the-top acting. It's more laughable than anything, and severely dents the film's ability to achieve its goals.
Again, it's never nice to say something like this, but miscasting Charles Wallace is a major reason why the movie isn't just dull, but often actively grating.
