After Earth: 5 Reasons We Should Do What They Did To Earth (And Forget About It)

4. Skyping Will Smith

After Earth

One of the glaring issues I take with After Earth is that it takes its best element--Will Smith--and puts him in the role of Skyping passenger. Throughout the misadventure, Will is confined to a single room while Jaden gets to have all of the fun. I gather the conflicted father/son relationship that M. Night was trying to build, but when all focus is placed upon a dull, obnoxious character like Kitai instead of someone like, y'know, Will Smith--there's a problem. When the more talented of two actors is given the short straw in regard to on-screen involvement, a director needs to make sure that not only the actor taking center stage can pull it off, but that the character he's portraying also embodies depth and compelling features needed for an audience to root for him. Kitai isn't an engrossing character, nor is Jaden old enough to carry the weight of a movie like this.

Greetings from The Yentz! The Warrior of the Wasteland! The Ayatollah of Rock and Rolla! I live, eat and breathe film... And videogames... And comics... And, well... Anything that might be considered "nerd related". I consider myself the voice against that of mainstream cinema. While critics might praise the ostentatious drivel supplied by Oscar-pandering films, I enjoy directing attention to less popular gems in hopes of educating people on incredible film experiences that may not be backed by massive studios, nominations and a star-studded cast. Outside of WhatCulture!, I write for Movieweb, assisted BlueCat as a script analyst, have worked on films from the east coast to the west and continue to write, critique and direct here in the lovable land of ol' LA. I hope you enjoy reading my diatribes as much as I enjoy writing them.
