Akira Kurosawa: Every Movie Ranked Worst To Best

20. Dreams (1990)

In a lot of ways, Dreams is the film Kurosawa was building toward his entire career, a stirring, innovative drama made up of eight short films, each based on a real dream from his past.

It's at once a war drama (The Tunnel), a stroke of magical realism (Crows), and a horror (The Blizzard), and Kurosawa wrings ample emotion and awe-inspiring imagery from his tall tales.

Produced with funding from Steven Spielberg and George Lucas, Dreams rises and falls with each segment, alternating from phenomenal to mundane, but even in its weakest sequences and jolting tone changes it remains the deeply personal work of a master filmmaker reflecting on his life in his twilight years.
