If you were to make a list detailing the best William Shakespeare adaptations ever filmed, Kurosawa's Throne of Blood would sit near the top.

Based on the bloodthirsty play Macbeth, the historical epic is as much as a supernatural drama as it is a haunting tale of greed and power, anchored by perhaps the most urgent and inspired performance of Toshiro Mifune's career, and Kurosawa's deep connection to the spiritual aspect of the play's harrowing story.

Filmed with bold action and gorgeous natural scenery, Throne of Blood captures Kurosawa's love for complex narratives, flawed characters and meticulous tension better than almost any other project in his filmography.
