Akira Kurosawa: Every Movie Ranked Worst To Best

28. The Most Beautiful (1944)

Though Kurosawa's early films all feature varying levels of propaganda, his second film The Most Beautiful is the most obvious of them all.

Set in an optics factory made up of a predominately female staff, the melodramatic slice of cinematic patriotism is both undeniably beautiful in its visual appeal, but sorely lacking in objectivity and deep meaning.

Well-intended as it may be, The Most Beautiful is also the most forgettable of Kurosawa's early work, and the only great thing that can be said of it is that he met his future wife Yōko Yaguchi during production.
