All 10 David Lynch Movies Ranked By Weirdness

1. Inland Empire

Still From Inland Empire
Absurda/Studio Canal

Lynch’s last feature film and boy is it a doozy. For the film buffs who had solved all of Lynch’s previous cinematic mysteries, meet your Final Boss.

Where even to begin with this one? It’s like if A.I. generated a Lynch movie, Inland Empire would be the result.

Laura Dern is back, and she’s playing an actress in a movie which turns out to be cursed. The lines between reality and filmic fantasy become, naturally, very blurred. Things that happen include Dern being stalked by a mysterious creep, The Phantom; a mystery involving a seedy Eastern European prostitute ring; a creepy sitcom starring people with rabbit heads; and at the end we even get a cameo from a lumberjack (whether he’s a native of Twin Peaks or Lumberton, it is unclear).

Plot is so secondary to form in Inland Empire that it is best simply to sit back and enjoy bathing in this strange Lynchian soup.

Weirdest Bit: When the sex workers perform a dance routine to “The Locomotion”. Just when you think you’ve seen it all...
