All 56 Walt Disney Animated Classics: Ranked From Worst To Best
37. The Fox And The Hound (1981)
There's no getting round the fact that The Fox And The Hound is very heavily steeped in the grand Disney tradition: it's cute, it's heartfelt, it has an important, sentimental message... It's just a little too bland for its own good.
Behind the scenes turmoil at Disney made making any features problematic, so it's worth noting that The Fox And The Hound survived its context to be a successful tear-jerker that offers welcome meditation on its ideas rather than simply using them to furnish an adventure. That's perhaps why it gets accused so frequently of being dull.
You'll just wish there was a little more substance to the plot.
36. The Many Adventures Of Winnie The Pooh (1977)
it almost doesn't matter what Winnie The pooh does specifically: more than any Disney feature star, he's all about the spirit of imagination (particularly as he's basically just an imaginary friend). Luckily, his first feature does great service to the character and to the source material: it's charming, faithful and delightful and it feels a little like the familiar, warm embrace of an old friend.
Strictly speaking, Many Adventures... is an anthology film, made up of three previously released featurettes with new bridging material to turn it into a single unified feature. Crucially, the film is faithful to the books, with animation based closely on the original illustrations and an integrity that will have delighted Pooh fans. They're charming little gems, and both wonderfully nostalgic and timeless.
