Alternative Oscars 2018: The Nominees & Winners For Every Category
3. Best Director
WINNER: Denis Villeneuve (Blade Runner 2049)
What Denis Villeneuve achieved with Blade Runner 2049 is nothing short of remarkable, largely delivering amid intense fan expectations, and telling a fascinating original story in its own right.
The sheer insane ambition of the movie, and how brilliantly Villeneuve executes it, makes his snub in the actual Oscars one of the more egregious omissions in recent years.
Though Get Out and Lady Bird were well-directed movies, they didn't really do anything especially ambitious or impressive. Sean Baker's work on The Florida Project and Matt Reeves' superb helming of War for the Planet of the Apes really should've replaced them (even though it would've resulted in five white male nominees, depressingly).
RUNNERS-UP:
2. Matt Reeves (War for the Planet of the Apes)
3. Sean Baker (The Florida Project)
4. Christopher Nolan (Dunkirk)
5. Paul Thomas Anderson (Phantom Thread)
