And finally, we come to the big one. Only four of the Academy's nine Best Picture picks made our own list of ten (the maximum number of nominees allowed), with populist picks Blade Runner 2049, War for the Planet of the Apes and Logan proving to be especially baffling exclusions.

For managing to deliver so firmly on expectations and serving up a visceral cinematic experience like no other, Blade Runner 2049 really deserves the win here, even if its divisive nature seemingly prevented it from even being nominated.

Real-life frontrunners Three Billboards and The Shape of Water are both fine picks, but the actual best films of last year? Not quite.
