Alternative Oscars 2019: The Nominees & Winners For Every Category

2. Best Sound Editing & Sound Mixing

First Man Ryan Gosling
Universal

WINNER: First Man*

We're lumping the two sound categories together because, let's face it, most voters just vote for the same movie in both fields anyway, and reportedly many within the sound branch even want the two categories to be amalgamated into one.

First Man should be the easy winner here, with its ultra-authentic depiction of the metal-rattling horror of spaceflight, mixed terrifically with Justin Hurwitz's sumptuous score. And to the Academy's credit, they nominated the film for both sound awards.

They also rightly nominated Roma for both awards and A Star Is Born for Best Sound Mixing, though left a few oddities in the pack: Bohemian Rhapsody's awful lip sync should've disqualified it from scoring dual sound nods, while Black Panther didn't do anything that remarkable.

Replacing those two, then, is Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which boasted an almost unthinkably complex soundscape and mixed it all together wonderfully, and also Mission: Impossible - Fallout, which wouldn't have been nearly as bracingly effective without its crunchy sound work.

RUNNERS-UP:

2. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

3. A Star Is Born*

4. Roma*

5. Mission: Impossible - Fallout
