Alternative Oscars 2019: The Nominees & Winners For Every Category
15. Best Original Screenplay
WINNER: Eighth Grade
What was the Academy smoking by shutting out Bo Burnham's incredible coming-of-age drama completely?
Despite being one of 2018's best-reviewed films, Eighth Grade fell completely on deaf ears with Oscar, even if it absolutely touts the most empathetic and achingly real screenplay of last year, original or adapted. Clearly the Academy needs more young women among its voter set.
The Favourite, Roma and First Reformed are at least worthy nominees in the ceremony proper, though neither Green Book nor Vice were remotely deserving of being recognised here.
Meanwhile, Hereditary may have favoured subtle, terse storytelling, but its expert fusion of devastating character drama and more conventional horror elements absolutely begged its inclusion here.
