Alternative Oscars: The Nominees & Winners For Every Category
16. Best Documentary
WINNER: 13th
Ava DuVernay's (Selma) shocking documentary about America's inherently racist penal system is a brutal expose of a regime in desperate need of change, detailing how the deck is stacked against blacks from the outset by powerful politicians both Democratic and Republican, and how slavery in essence is still lingering around.
It is by far the most important documentary film released this year, but it's also the most informative, surprising and powerful, and to give DuVernay her moment up on the Oscar podium would only hammer the film's crucial message home further.
