Amsterdam Review: 5 Ups & 5 Downs
1. It Basically Works As A Comedy
If you look at Amsterdam less as a drama depicting events that sometimes actually happened and more as a kooky, absurdist farce, it goes down much smoother.
After all, while the film's dramatics don't always convince, it is a consistently amusing piece of work, if often dryly so, which probably should've leaned even harder into the comedy side of things.
When it focuses on being a quirky character comedy using a real-life political backdrop, it often sings, even if the humour can be quashed by the film's aggressively all-over-the-place tone.
With a major editorial overhaul, Amsterdam probably could've been whittled into a leaner, more outwardly comedic offering, given that there are still many laughs to be had, and they're largely the most entertaining parts of the movie.
