Andy Serkis: His 8 Best Performances
5. Ulysses Klaue (Black Panther)
After being introduced in a light cameo role in Avengers: Age of Ultron, Serkis gets to come back to the role of Ulysses Klaue in a more fleshed-out capacity in Ryan Coogler's sublime Marvel film.
While Serkis' Klaue may not get tons of screentime, he sure does make what time he does have count. Without the burden of being the film's central antagonist, Serkis goes all-in on a scenery-chewing performance that only he could deliver. He imbues Klaue with such childlike, over-the-top enthusiasm that it is contagious.
This is a performance in which Serkis sings an out-of-nowhere cover of Haddaway's What Is Love for absolutely no reason and it is never addressed again. It's also a film in which Coogler's most impressive shot of the entire film (the long-take in the casino) is punctuated by Serkis delivering an "I made it rain" joke.
All the while, Serkis somehow still makes Klaue an imposing and compelling villain. He plays off of Michael B. Jordan's Killmonger phenomenally well and cements himself as one of the top tier MCU villains in the process. Black Panther is a film populated with absolutely stellar, awards-worthy performances but none of them are quite as unhinged and off-the-charts as Serkis' own.
