Angelina Jolie Passes 'Salt 2' Screenplay Back To Studio & Says Try Again

Kurt Wimmer & Columbia to start over on the proposed sequel's script after Jolie sends it back displeased.

Angelina Jolie has received the first draft screenplay for a proposed sequel to her 2010 spy actioner "Salt" but is so displeased with the effort she has sent it back to Columbia Pictures and writer Kurt Wimmer and told them to start over from scratch, according to Moviehole. Which is interesting as Wimmer's script for the first "Salt" was horrific, saved only by veteran filmmaker Phillip Noyce's frantic direction and ability to keep the movie going at breakneck speed, desperately trying not to let the viewer actually think about the ludicrous narrative his writer has plotted. So either Jolie made the original "Salt" without reading the script and this time around she hasn't made the same mistake, or Wimmer has turned in something that tops the last movie for hideousness. Either way Jolie isn't happy and without her Columbia have no franchise. The original "Salt" made $300 million worldwide in the summer of 2010 and in these tough economic times that was enough of a winner for a follow-up to be signed off. Wimmer was quickly re-hired and although Noyce wasn't keen on making another (probably thinking he couldn't pull off the miracle of making anything but a complete disaster from the quality of writing on display), Columbia were going hell for leather on getting a sequel made and made fast whilst "Salt" is still somewhat in the memory of those who saw it. But with Jolie passing on the script recently, likely meaning a sequel won't go in front of camera's this year, the chances of it ever happening have dropped down a couple of percentages. You have to believe the proposed idea for a sequel has a sell by date of 2014 for production to begin and with Jolie only making on average about one movie a year these days, Columbia can't afford to give her another lackluster screenplay next time round.
