Ant-Man Review: 8 Ways It's Better Than Avengers: Age Of Ultron
4. It's Got A Distinct Style
With the superhero genre now around for almost two decades, things are having to get mixed up to keep things fresh. That's why the most successful entries in the MCU tend to boast a unique perspective that sees the usual comic book tropes melded with a specific genre; as already stated, Iron Man 3 was a Shane Black film; Captain America: The Winter Soldier was a conspiracy thriller; Guardians Of The Galaxy was a throwback sci-fi romp. They're still Marvel movies first-and-foremost, but have enough added to offer something new. Ant-Man is a prime example of this, bringing traditional comedy elements and cool crime heist tropes together into something that's almost an Oceans-style caper. It's not as dominant an angle as it was in, say, Guardians, but it makes the film something fresh (which other twelfth entries in franchises can't really claim). Age Of Ultron, on the other hand, is just... a generic summer blockbuster. The first movie felt like a Joss Whedon ensemble piece, only with Marvel characters delivering his banterous dialogue, but the sequel falls under the weight of so many things to juggle that it winds up a rather indistinct film. There's attempts to replicate the same ideas as the original, but a poorly attempted turn into darkness makes it all feel rather disjointed.
