Despite some pretty ardent criticism from certain quarters (a lot of them coincidentally wearing Edgar Wright T-shirts), Ant-Man was an unexpectedly great addition to Marvel's Phase 2. it was funny, unconventional and entertaining, and it made great use of three actors with wonderful charisma in Paul Rudd, Michael Douglas and Evangeline Lilly. And now, as indication of how well it did in Marvel's eyes, a sequel has officially been greenlit, swelling Marvel's Phase3 and shifting a couple of other films around. The sequel, which will share top billing between Rudd's Ant-Man and Lilly's Wasp will be released on July 6, 2018, pushing Black Panther up to February 16, 2018 and Captain Marvel to March 8, 2019. And not only that, Marvel have also announced that three more movies are being tagged onto the end of Phase 3 in 2020. They will be released on May 1, 2020, July 10, 2020, and November 6, 2020. Quite what they are remains to be seen, but they will hopefully go some way to picking up the pieces after Infinity War, and the debut of Inhumans. Marvel announced the four new movies with pride at Ant-Man's $178.5M domestic and $231.3M international haul for a global total of $409.8M, pushing it into the top 9 of the year so far before it's even open in China. There was also confirmation that Avengers: Age Of Ultron has earned $458.9M domestically and $946M internationally for a global total of $1,404.9M. That puts it at number 2 for the year and #6 of all time. That will probably change when Star Wars; The Force Awakens, but Disney probably won't mind. There's also a tease of "more exciting announcements on Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the future", with casting news for Black Panther and confirmation of who will be directing, plus something relating to Doctor Strange and Captain Marvel expected soon.
