Even the movie's most ardent fans will surely admit that the story's a bit of a mess. It's nothing new for a spy thriller to be intentionally confusing and convoluted, but in addition to being hyper-complicated at times, the plot's first half is actually rather uninteresting.

After all, how many times have audiences watched heroes attempt to track down a microfilm before the baddies do? It's depressingly dull, and though it's mercifully propped up by the film's many positives, it's still a shame the story isn't more coherent and imaginative.

Some might also be thrown by the film's needless fleeting back between the past and present, a rather played-out conceit that ultimately works to its detriment here.
