7. My Fair Lady (1964)
The Oscar winner that never was,
My Fair Lady had been long-tipped in its day to be a shoo-in for Oscar noms for everyone - unfortunately, Audrey Hepburn's spirited and spiky portrayal of Cockney waif-turned-debutante Eliza Doolittle was left out, leaving a trail of controversy in its wake, However, we can still all enjoy the brisk beauty of the film - the songs are catchy and timeless, the production is astoundingly gorgeous and the casting of Rex Harrison as the cantankerous, sexist Professor opposite Hepburn is a wonderful callback to the best screwball comedies of the 1930s and 1940s, their on-screen chemistry popping and fizzing with the force of sherbert - and it's just as tasty too.
