So far, the biggest story to emerge from all this recent Avengers 4 chatter is a batch of set photos snapped by Just Jared, showing Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson and Paul Rudd preparing to film some scenes.

The three were snapped at the Landmark Jr. Diner in Atlanta, Georgia (via Just Jared). At first glance there doesn't seem to be anything of note going on here, but look a little closer and there's actually a lot worth discussing.

The first thing to point out is that all three actors are wearing "civilian" clothes. But after Thanos' snap (and if the characters remained in the present day), why would there be any reason for them to change out of their superhero attire?

Steve wouldn't be strutting around in a nice shirt and a pair of shades when half the human population had just vanished. Whatever's going on in this scene, it's clearly set in the past - whether these are younger versions of the characters, or present-day versions who've outfitted themselves to look like their past counterparts - reinforcing the idea that Avengers 4 will jump back in time somehow.

Also reinforcing that idea: Johansson's change back to red hair, and Evans' return to a clean-shaven face and shorter hair. They both look like their characters, only a few years younger.

On the other hand, Paul Rudd just looks like same-old Paul Rudd - he doesn't look like a younger version of Scott Lang at all.

Still, this seems right. A lot of time travel theories revolve around the idea that Ant-Man will be one of the characters who actually jumps back in time, so it makes sense that he looks like present-day Scott in these images.

So what's happening in this scene, and in what time period does it take place? Unfortunately, there isn't a lot to go on here besides the location.

The concept of a traditional diner feels quite old-school-American by today's standards, so maybe the trio is revisiting a key memory from Steve's younger days, sometime before he crashed Red Skull's ship into the water.

But admittedly, that's a long shot.

It's frustrating to have to wait so long for answers, but credit where credit is due: Marvel is doing a brilliant job keeping a lid on any potential leaks. Though these set pictures are loaded with tantalising possibilities, they give virtually nothing away about the film's plot - certainly nothing that could be considered a spoiler.

Fortunately, as the end of the year creeps ever closer, it won't be long before we get our first official look at the film. Infinity War's trailer debuted on 29 November 2017, so around that same time this year, Avengers 4's general premise might finally be brought into the light.
