Steve Rogers is the heart and soul of the Marvel Universe, and it'll be a heartbreaking moment when he has to move on.

That said, there's no denying that - thematically speaking at least - it makes sense to end Steve Rogers' journey in Avengers 4. He's the man out of time after all, and while that statement has always taken on a metaphorical meaning, there could yet be a more literal interpretation in mind for Avengers 4.

For all intents and purposes, the MCU's interpretation of the Infinity Saga represents the end of an era. Slowly but surely, we've seen Marvel plan for the future, with films like Ant-Man, Doctor Strange and the soon to be released Captain Marvel all obviously priming these characters for an integral role in Phases 4, 5 and beyond.

Steve Rogers, much like Tony Stark, represents the franchise's past, but while Tony very much has an exit plan when it comes to superherodom (his desire to settle down with Pepper and have children being a tacit reminder of that fact), Steve doesn't; he has no reason to stop being Captain America, and when you take that into account along with Infinity War's lethal characteristics, the end of the line - so to speak - could come in Avengers 4.

Steve was always about laying down his life for others to live, and while he wasn't about trading anyone else's during Infinity War, if it means bringing back his compatriots, it'll be a price he's willing to pay.
