Avengers Endgame: 10 Unexpected Consequences To Reversing The Snap
6. A World Without The Sorcerer Supreme
We’ve talked a little about the collateral damage involved in Thanos’ snap: how the loss of the wrong person at the wrong place at the wrong time could cause dozens, maybe hundreds of others to suffer.
Well, the sorcerer Stephen Strange was one of those countless victims - and he was the Sorcerer Supreme of the Earth Dimension, the first and last line of defence for this plane of existence against the myriad horrors that encroach upon our reality from outside space and time.
So what happens in his absence? Do some Council Of Elders somewhere look through their rolodexes to find another powerful wizard to take on the job? Does Wong step up, or - god forbid - Mordo?
Because if not, then there will be an SS-shaped hole in the universe for five years: five years, during which time the whole of this plane of reality will have been left open to abuse by appalling hellspawn with breathtakingly poor hygiene and worse social skills. To quote Terry Pratchett, “the pretty ones look like a cross between an ugly octopus and an angry bicycle.”
But let’s say the Universe replaces the Sorcerer Supreme to avoid exactly this scenario taking place. One assumes that Strange will then have to contend with his replacement upon his resurrection, or relinquish the mantle and no longer be Sorcerer Supreme.
And does Strange’s death - even if only temporary - remove the promise that Dormammu made to him to leave this dimension alone?
