Avengers Endgame: 10 Unexpected Consequences To Reversing The Snap

4. Economic Crises Mean Radical Changes In The Law

The emergency powers needed to deal with this sudden loss of life have already been touched on, but let’s go further.

First, simple mathematics. Half as many people means half as much taxation: right when the majority of governments need to shore up infrastructure and create programmes to deal with the aforementioned aftereffects of worldwide genocide.

When the snapped return, the vast majority will be in no position to immediately begin contributing again, placing an untenable burden on economies that were already stretched to breaking point.

This would lead to numerous poorer nations plunging into debt. Look at the recent crisis in Greece, the longest running recession of any developed nation, where draconian austerity and reforms led to a humanitarian crisis, poverty and loss of income countrywide, increasing social exclusion, turning the political system on its head and resulting in the loss of hundreds of thousands of the more well-educated and well-off as they sought a better life elsewhere.

Well, post-Endgame practically every country would be suffering that level of crisis or worse, and enacting the kind of scary-ass legislation that previously you could only read about in the dystopian fiction section of the bookshop.

We’re talking increased basic taxation, the debriding of basic services, restriction of movement, martial law in places: the whole totalitarian nine yards.
