Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) was surely the most unexpected casualty in Endgame, sacrificing herself in order for The Avengers to gain possession of the Soul Stone and eventually defeat Thanos (Josh Brolin).

In tribute to her effort, Endgame's extras include a featurette on the history of the character, with the Russo brothers sitting down to discuss her legacy and the impact of her ultimate sacrifice.

Joe Russo even went on to call Black Widow's death "the single most heroic moment in the history of the Marvel Universe", which feels a tad surprising given the more obviously operatic heroism of Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) in his final world-saving act of sacrifice.

Furthermore, Black Widow's death fell slightly flat in the overall scheme of things, and with her solo movie due out next year, it's also easy to be skeptical that this is really the end for the character.

Perhaps Joe Russo's statement is "proof" that Natasha really is gone for good post-Endgame, as he appreciates a finality to her demise that suspicious fans simply cannot.

Either way, given the Earth-shattering impact of Stark's sacrifice, it's surprising to hear the director go to bat quite so strong for one of the movie's more divisive moments.
