Avengers: Endgame - 13 Best Callbacks To The MCU
1. One Last Dance That Lasts A Lifetime
In a delightfully unexpected turn of events, the Russos go about as minimalist and intimate as possible for the final shots of Endgame. The final frame isn't of the team, it isn't of some wide-spanning landscape, it isn't even of the Avengers facility being rebuilt. Instead, it's of Steve Roger and Peggy Carter sharing a kiss.
After going back into the Quantum Realm one last time at the end of the film, Steve bypasses his time stamp and instead goes back to live his life with Peggy. This provides an emotional pay off to a setup from all the way back in 2011 with Captain America: The First Avenger, wherein Cap promised Peggy a date just as he crashed his ship into the ice to save the world.
After having seen the effects old age had on Peggy in Winter Soldier and her subsequent funeral in Civil War, audiences had very much experience Steve's loss and pain with him at never being able to keep his promise. Heck, in Age of Ultron, it was revealed to be his greatest fear and regret during his Scarlet Witch-induced vision.
So ending the film and Captain America's story on Cap finally getting out of the war, leaving it all behind, and getting to share a life with Peggy is just about as perfect of a coda for this film and character that one could hope for.
