It was impossible to avoid the stench of death hanging over Avengers: Endgame from the moment Thanos snapped his fingers at the end of Infinity War. With that small action he brought about a catastrophic change, wiping out trillions instantaneously in the interest of "saving" the universe from itself.

Now that Avengers: Endgame has been out for a little while and with advanced tickets breaking records, most will now know that the film is not as heavy on deaths as we might have initially expected. Sure, there are big departures, but this could have been a bloodbath and instead it was more like a babbling brook.

Having said that, the film could also have reversed absolutely everything that happened in Infinity War and removed all sense of true stakes in the MCU, but they mercifully cut a finer balance. Some characters are now dead for good, even if they didn't quite die so well.
