Who would've ever expected that Thor: The Dark World would end up playing such an important role in Endgame's narrative?

An overweight, boozy Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and Rocket (Bradley Cooper) end up travelling back to 2013 Asgard to retrieve the Reality Stone from Jane Foster (Natalie Portman).

The real dramatic purpose of the sequence, however, is to give Thor a poignant, fleeting reunion with his mother, Frigga (Rene Russo), on the very day she's killed at the behest of Malekith (Christopher Eccleston).

In an affecting heart-to-heart, Thor tries to warn Frigga of her demise, but ever the wise one, she quickly realises what's going on and insists she can't know anything about her fate, before comforting Thor over his emotional devastation and begging him to eat a salad.

Given that Infinity War saw Thor steal the show with his arrival in Wakanda, it's fitting that his best scene in Endgame was the total opposite - a quiet, character-driven moment.
