11. Cap's Worthiness

The Question

This one's been mentioned a fair few times since we all saw Cap pick up Mjolnir in the climactic battle sequence in Endgame. After all, if he was worthy, how come he couldn't pick the hammer up in Age Of Ultron? What changed to make him worthy?

The Answer

Well, nothing, it turns out, because Cap was ALWAYS worthy.

According to the Russo brothers, he was worthy back around the time of Ultron, as the hammer shifting proved, but he consciously chose not to move it:

"Cap’s sense of character and humility and, out of deference to Thor’s ego, Cap in that moment realizing he can move the hammer, decides not to."

It fits Cap's humility, but would Thor really have been that egotistical? He was worthy himself, after all...
