Avengers: Endgame - Every Mystery The Russos Have Answered (So Far)
8. What Drove Hulk And How He Did It
The Question
Professor Hulk was great - and his reveal was a top moment, but why didn't we get to see how Hulk merged the two sides of his identity? It seems like a fairly big question, considering Banner had fought for so long for some sort of control.
The Answer
Part of the answer is clearly that when the directors chose the five year time jump, they couldn't show what specifically happened in that window. So Professor Hulk had to arrive fully formed and reveal his transformation in retrospect.
But the Russos did answer how Professor Hulk came into existence:
"We wanted to track how every one of the Avengers was moving forward from the experience of Infinity War. Banner is left with this reality that neither version of himself could stop Thanos. So he dedicates himself to making sure this never happens again."
That's interesting - so essentially, Bruce and the Hulk realised their war with one another was hindering their achievements, so they combined to create a third identity. He's not a compromise on either Banner or Hulk, though, he's rather an improvement on both.
The film-makers have also revealed since release that they had planned to have Hulk and Banner merge as Professor Hulk during the Wakanda battle sequence in Infinity War.
