Avengers: Endgame Review - 11 Ups & 4 Downs
7. Paul Rudd (And Some Other People Who Are Funny Too)
If there's anything that people will focus on as divisive in this film, a lot of it is probably linked to the use of humour - not merely in frequency, but in terms of where it comes in proximity with huge, tense or emotionally challenging moments.
But very impressively, the film never really shoehorns any comedy in in a way that some other MCU movies have in the past to less success. And it's mostly because the comedy duties fall to Thor, Rocket and, in particular, Paul Rudd, who is to be cherished and protected at all costs.
Rudd's fish-out-of-water comedy spirit works incredibly well here: we know he's not the same as the other heroes and there's enormous reward in it. He's also key to the plot, obviously and he gets a great spectacle moment late on, but he knits lots of scenes together with some very welcome levity that shouldn't be ignored.
