Unfortunately for the Avengers, their initial plan to rescue those killed by Thanos doesn't go according to plan. Spurred on primarily by a sense of anger and confusion - and by the arrival of Captain Marvel - Captain America, Thor, Nebula, Black Widow, Rocket, Bruce Banner and War Machine search out the Mad Titan to make him reverse what he'd just accomplished. By the time they arrive, however, the situation is seemingly hopeless.

Captain Marvel had only been able to track Thanos thanks to a major burst of cosmic radiation traced to a specific planet. By the time she and the rest of the team arrive, it's revealed that the burst in question was a result of Thanos having destroyed the Infinity Stones. The gauntlet also unusable, and with the rest of the stones now lost, Thor decapitates the Mad Titan and leaves dejected, along with the rest of the Avengers.

This is where the time jump comes in. Although Earth's Mightiest Heroes attempted to mount a rescue in the immediate wake of the Decimation - about 20ish days judging by how long Iron Man and Nebula are floating in space - it proved to be a pointless endeavour. Five years on, and with the world still struggling to readjust, things are pretty hopeless.

However, while some people move on, they don't. And with the reemergence of Scott Lang, Steve, Nat et al. are all finally put on the path that'll help them resurrect Thanos' victims...
