Avengers: Endgame saw the titular team of heroes split up as they travelled across time, finding themselves in multiple different time periods from the MCU's history. However, one of the shared universe's most beloved heroes almost went to a completely different location.

On an interview with The Empire Film Podcast last year, Christopher McFeely revealed that the original plan was for Tony Stark to go to Asgard in 2013 (during the events of of Thor: The Dark World) as the Tesseract would have also been there.

"Technically in Thor: The Dark World, the Tesseract is in the vault as the Aether is also there... So that sent Tony to Asgard, and he had an invisible stealth suit, and he fought Heimdall, who could of course see him. I think Joe [Russo] went in and said, 'Why don't we go in to Avengers? It's the biggest movie, it's the most fun, let's go."

McFeely then revealed during the watch party that the idea was dropped because it lacked emotional.

The idea of an Endgame that didn't revisit the epic New York battle of 2012 (which took place during The Avengers) sounds too weird to even fathom, but it might have been worth it for an epic showdown between Iron Man and Heimdall.
