Infinity War certainly doesn't make light of Thanos' presence, wasting little time establishing him as a dominant threat before he is confronted by the Guardians of the Galaxy on Knowhere. However, an earlier draft of the script had him showing up to decimate Xandar in search of the Power Stone.

On the commentary track of the film's home release, director Joe Russo and writer Christopher Markus revealed that Thanos would have encountered Gamora there instead of Knowhere but that, in the hopes of making everything seem less 'repetitive', they decided to cut the scene.

Instead, they pushed the Xandar battle off-screen and started 'in the middle of the story' instead.
