Just because Loki fought by Thor's side and assisted with the evacuation of Asgard doesn't mean he's a reformed character. The god of mischief is well known for looking after number one and self-preservation will be top of his agenda when Thanos attacks.

Just as he sided with the Grandmaster on Sakaar, the Asgardian trickster will switch sides in a heartbeat once he realises the Mad Titan has the power to flatten the Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy, even without the Infinity Stones.

Those scenes in the trailers where Loki appears to be handing the Tesseract to Thanos so he can extract the Space Stone concealed within? You can bet there was minimal coercion on the alien warlord's part. Loki, no doubt, willingly helped the villain, acting on his own interests in the hope of brokering the best outcome for himself.

In the long run, the Asgardian is a true wildcard, as it's unclear whether he will switch sides yet again, in true Loki fashion, before the war is over. There's also a chance Thanos will dispose of him once he has the Tesseract, to nip this problem in the bud.
