4. The Snap Is The Final Shot

The Rumour: With all the "will he, won't he?" speculation about Thanos carrying out the iconic finger snap, there was a thoroughly reasonable expectation from many that this would in fact be the film's final shot, with an instant cut to black and the mere, ominous echo of the snap ringing out before the credits roll.

The Truth: While it certainly would've been a chilling way to end the movie, clearly the Russos wanted to contextualise Thanos' actions a little more, so we not only got a Soul Stone-influenced meeting with young Gamora, but were forced to watch some of our favourite heroes turn to dust before our very eyes.

This all led to a fantastic final shot in its own right, of Thanos sitting peacefully on a planet and observing the gorgeous sunset, a job well done.

Though the snap as a final shot would've had a far more bracing and blunt impact, depicting the villain winning in such decisive terms, and clearly thinking himself every bit the heroes the Avengers also view themselves as, is a fascinatingly subversive way to present a superhero antagonist.
