Avengers: Infinity War - 35 Easter Eggs & References Explained

8. The Biblical Reference

Sacrifice Of Isaac
Wikipedia

The sacrifice that Thanos is instructed to make of the only thing he loves - Gamora - very much feels like a modern retelling of the biblical story of Abraham, who was commanded by God to offer his son Isaac as a sacrifice. In that story, God intervenes after Abraham proves himself fearful of his Lord and Isaac is saved, but Thanos and Gamora's story is more tragic.

In both cases, the cost of proving your commitment is the thing most dear to you and it definitely feels like this was where the inspiration for that devastating sequence comes from.
