Avengers: Infinity War - What Does The Ending Really Mean?
1. Doctor Strange Knew How To Win
While he still had the Time Stone, Doctor Strange used it to zip into the future and see all the possible outcomes of the fight against Thanos. And despite the fact he sees millions of potential outcomes, there's only one that they win.
It's easy to forget that fact when he's handing over the Time Stone to Thanos, given the sheer surprise of the moment and Tony Stark's disbelief, but Strange made such a point of protecting the Stone that he wouldn't give it up lightly.
That would mean Doctor Strange knew how to win, and that for some reason it involved Thanos getting all of the Infinity Stones and destroying half the universe. It's an, er, interesting strategy, but will it pay off? The thinking is presumably along the lines of Thanos ultimately self-destructing or realising his mistake, to accomplish which he'd have to 'win' in the first place, or instead linked to the characters left alive. Either that or the man's a fool.
For Avengers 4, it places the onus squarely back on Robert Downey Jr's Iron Man, since he's the only one left (maybe) who knows that Strange saw them winning and could figure out why he gave up the Time Stone so willingly.
Only a year to wait...
