WHY She Died

The MCU has had a long-running thread on sacrifice and it all came to a climax when Red Skull told Thanos that he had to sacrifice that which he loved to complete the transaction with the Soul Stone. Everyone from Thor to Captain America to Tony Stark and Vision has had to face the decision to make a sacrifice at some point, and it's very much a rich vein MCU writers like to return to.

Having Gamora - a character who SEEMED safe - become Thanos' sacrifice was the easiest way of showing the humanity in Thanos as well as the true cost of the Stones and his conviction. It was the moment that really reinforced what he was - and how much more than a one-dimensional villain he was.
