BAFTAs 2019: 6 Ups & 8 Downs
2. The "Awards Presented Earlier" Montage
In order to cram the ceremony into a 2-hour slot, the show has to be edited down significantly, with a number of the "lesser" awards being spliced into an "Awards Presented Earlier" montage.
In addition to being incredibly patronising to the craftsmen who won and were nominated for these awards, it's especially frustrating given the 15+ minutes that were wasted on the utterly charmless and flat opening segment.
The categories relegated to the montage included Best Animated Film (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse), Best Production Design (The Favourite), Best Editing (Vice) and Best Documentary (Free Solo), but would it really have killed the BBC to either allot an extra half-hour to include every award, or just cut down on the blatant padding?
Additionally, the edit bay was clearly in a rush to have the show ready for air, because the montage also accidentally included two awards which actually made it into the final broadcast, Best Foreign Film (Roma) and Best Costume Design (The Favourite). So sloppy.
